On behalf of a manufacturer of heavy-duty plant for the offshore industry, VIRO helped develop a 5000-tonne crane – a massive machine able to lift and move large sections of drilling platforms and the like. The tasks included designing the A-frame, the slewing system and the hoisting hook, plus all the necessary strength calculations, which have to be absolutely accurate with a structure of this unprecedented magnitude. Naturally, international standards and certification requirements (DNV) also had to be taken into account.
Based upon the initial specifications drawn up jointly with the client, a large number of studies and engineering tasks were also conducted.
Crane design tasks
- Preparation of draft designs for the initial rough calculations
- All necessary basic engineering work and layouts
- All necessary FEM calculations (Femap)
- All necessary detail and production drawings (NX)
