Engineering Analysis was commissioned by Royal Wagenborg to conduct static structural FEM analyses on the stepped bulkhead of a push-pull unit. FEM analyses stands for Finite Element Method (FEM) analyses. The FE model of the stepped bulkhead was reproduced in a detailed model, including all corresponding welded joints.
Strength calculation of push-pull unit
Two cylinders weighing nine tonnes each apply a heavy load to the joints of the stepped bulkhead. The total mass to be shifted amounted to no less than 170 tonnes! FEM analyses were carried out in order to guarantee the strength of the joints during the push and pull action of the cylinders. The results of these analyses showed that the joints were strong enough to comply with the NEN-EN 1993-1-8 standard. All the results were incorporated in a final report and the stepped bulkhead was subsequently put into production.
