For Stextile BV, we provided the basic engineering and cost estimate for a processing installation process that creates a flax-like fibre from hemp plants. This is based on the steam explosion technique (Stex), developed by the “Fraunhofer-Institut für Angewandte Festkörperphysik” IAF in Germany. Hemp fibre can be used as a raw material for producing sustainable and elastic yarn. As a strong alternative to the more environmentally harmful cotton, this yarn can be used in the clothing industry as well as in the automotive and medical sectors. Our activities included creating a process design, taking into account an optimal energy/heat balance and the production method, in order to subsequently produce a technical design and partial budgets for each discipline and required hardware. This enabled to establish the total investment budget for the funding of a pilot site in the German/Dutch border region. A multidisciplinary project featuring Project Management, Piping & Equipment, Electrical Engineering & Instrumentation and Industrial Automation.
