Engineering Analysis has performed various strength analyses on the new lock gates in the Panama Canal. The 16 lock gates make the route between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans possible for shipping traffic. They are 31 metres high, 57 metres wide, and 10 metres thick.
Static and fatigue assessments of lock gates
The gigantic gates are an important element in the reliability of the canal. They must endure both enormous water pressure and exposure to earthquakes. The gates have therefore been subjected to both static and fatigue assessment in accordance with the Eurocode 3 standard, using FEM analyses.
