For Plasticon, VIRO designed a mobile winding unit that can be used anywhere in the world. In addition to the complete engineering, the project included the supervision of the construction of this machine. The mobile winding unit is suitable for producing glass fibre reinforced cylindrical parts of tanks, vessels, and flue gas outlets. The winding process makes it possible to produce the products that weigh 25 tonnes and have a maximum diameter of 10 metres. The product is wound horizontally and placed on a winding mandrel, after which the product is unloaded and removed from the mandrel vertically. Based on the concept engineering, the package of requirements was formulated, which served as the starting point for the basic engineering. After the basic engineering, the design was modelled in detail and prepared for production.
Scope of winding unit project
VIRO was commissioned by Plasticon to perform the project management, mechanical and electrical detail engineering, strength and rigidity calculations, and supplier preselection. The Engineering Analysis department supported the design process for the mobile winding unit by performing strength calculations. This involved use of a finite element model (FEM/FEA) with which the strength and rigidity of the mobile winding unit were validated. This approach considerably accelerated the design process, resulting in cost savings. Production and construction supervision were also part of the commission. This multidisciplinary project included not only structural, process engineering, mechanical, electrical, and automation processes, but also the training of our customer’s personnel and the commissioning of the machine.
