Van Tongeren Kennemer specialises in equipment manufacturing for air and gas systems. Engineering Analysis was asked by the company to perform a variety of strength calculations on a flue gas fan. This fan has a diameter of eight metres and is used in the blast furnace industry. Engineering Analysis specialises in performing strength and rigidity calculations using the Finite Element Method (FEM).

A final element model was created of the flue gas fan. To do so, the 3D CAD model was converted into a model which could be used to perform calculations. In addition to modelling the complete fan in FEM, the tensions, deformations, bearing loads, and natural frequencies were also determined. The strength calculations were carried out while the fan was stationary and also while running at operating speed. The results were assessed and set out clearly in a final report.
